Red Monroe is a kind and clumsy friend of Ruby Redfort's who also attends Twinford Junior High School. Red has long red hair and freckles and is tall. She is credited with being very beautiful. Red is described as having an innocent face.

Red is extremely clumsy; she accidentally breaks Ruby's guitar and violin - but she is not unkind, and assures Ruby that she will buy her a new one. She is kind and sensitive; she feels sorry for people and is good at pretending to take an interest in something to avoid hurting their feelings. Red is nice and will always agree to help with something if she is asked.
In the second book she hears the Sea Whisperer during the school swim-a-thon, which Ruby dismisses as Red's imagination, as Red is very suggestible, often prone to imagining things, and is extremely clumsy.
Red is very good at chess.

Red lives with her mother Sadie, who is a costume designer for movies, and her older brother Jem who plays the guitar. They live in Silver Hills near Frederick Lutz's. Red’s father left when she was a baby.
She was born in late October of 1959.
She calls her mother by her actual name.
